My first blog about my personal journey to build a gentleman’s wardrobe: my 5-year project.

The 5- year project is in part a reaction against the prevailing culture of ‘right now.’ Some things take time and should take time because they are important.  To me clothing is important because without it we’d all be naked. 🙂  Not a great idea; not very attractive….  More importantly, being properly attired can raise our confidence levels and shape the impressions others gain about us, and indeed that we gain about ourselves.

This a blog for men. We are not entirely comfortable in our own skin when it comes to matters of style.  For women and for the new ‘metrosexuals’ its OK to have a certain sense of style.  But for average and slightly old fashioned guys like me?  The jury is out.  In addition, it seems to me that the very notion of manhood and manliness is up for debate.  This  blog hopes to make some contribution to that ongoing conversation.

In the interest of openness, I have no formal links with any clothing designers or retailers.  I am an amateur. The site receives no corporate sponsorship so anything I say is my own opinion, and mine alone.

Feel free to leave comments and suggestions. Happy reading

  1. Hi there,
I’m in love with the TML pink check slim fit St James collar, this would look amazing on gray suit, yes? do you know a specific store i can order online?

    1. Sorry for the delayed response. You should be able to order online without needing to access any particular store. You should be able to pick it up for free from the nearest store however, If you wish.

Hope this is helpful. Keep reading the blog!

    2. Charles Tyrwhitt over TML for shirts. Can’t comment on the suits.

Similar prices, but better quality. It’s the little touches like brass collar stiffeners that make it. Also their ironless shirts are the best I’ve used so far, definitely a must if you iron your own shirts.

      1. I like CT shirts but prefer TML’s. However, like you, AH, I really like the brass collar stays that CT provides.

It is all about personal preference at the end of the day, though. They both produce great shirts.

Have you tried Hawes & Curtis? They also have a great range of shirts.

  2. I have just been sent an invoice for £800 for having that pic of a kid stacking coins on my site Apparently its a Getty Images item and they are trawling round looking at peoples sites and sending shitty letters.

Not sure if you are exempt having a blog, might be ok. But for commercial its a defo no no.
If you can swap it out for a free one you might be saving yourself some money.

Sorry to bother you in this manner but hope your money stays in your pocket not theirs.

  3. I love menswear as my husband has been in the rag trade all his life (30yrs+), now working for an import/export company manufacturing menswear…oh and my daughter has worked at the same company (based in Manchester) for the last five years…however, she is now preparing for another chapter in her life as she’s travelling to Oz for a year! Good Luck with your project! It’s s great idea.
