Unless you’ve been under a rock somewhere you’ll have heard of Jag’s new F-Type. Successor to the iconic E type it has been 50 years in the making. Jag has not had the self confidence to make a direct successor until now.
It is not for the faint hearted, the F-Type. It makes all Jag sports cars before it seem soft. XKR? Namby-pamby. This one is designed to eat Porsches.
All of which makes the F-Pace a really interesting development. That Jag was going to make an SUV was the world’s worst kept secret since the reveal of the Cx17 concept in 2013.
However, Jaguar have recently revealed the name of their first ever SUV: F-Pace. That means that they are linking it explicitly to the F-Type. They are making a statement that the F-Pace might look like an SUV but it is to have the heart of a sports car. And a serious one too.
Funnily enough, this is precisely the claim tha Porsche makes for its newest SUV, the Macan, against which the F-Pace will compete. Indeed, over the weekend I popped into my nearest Porsche dealer (nearer than you might imagine) to have a look at said Macan.
I’d seen it in my car mags but never in the metal. Nice looking thing. Purposeful. Not driven one (yet) but they are meant to be awesome.
So if the F-Pace wants to beat Porsche at their own game, looks like Jag are going to have to raise their own game. Bring on 2016 when we should see the the F-Pace released into the wild. Hope it lives up to the hype. Roll on 2016!
